Plugins and mods are not interchangeable: they target different server software and may require different client-side setup. Checking the Minecraft version, server type and dependencies can prevent many startup problems.
This guide covers the installation sequence and log-based troubleshooting. The exact interface and access method depend on your chosen service.
1. Check compatibility
| Question | Why does it matter? |
|---|---|
| Plugin vagy mod? | Paper's plugins folder and a mod loader's mods folder serve different environments. |
| Which Minecraft version? | An add-on made for an older or newer release may not work. |
| Which mod loader? | Do not assume a Fabric mod is compatible with Forge. |
| Which dependencies are required? | The add-on may require a separate library, API or another mod. |
| Is it also required on the player's computer? | Depending on its documentation, a mod may be needed on the client, server or both. |
2. Install a Paper plugin
- Create a backup and download the correct release from the add-on's trusted official source.
- Stop the server and place the required JAR file in its plugins directory. If the download is an archive, first locate the correct JAR.
- Install the documented dependencies too. Do not leave two versions of the same plugin in the folder.
- Restart the server, read the startup log, then verify that the plugin loads and works.
- Configure the plugin according to its guide and test important permissions too.
/plugins3. Install a modpack
- Choose the exact modpack release and its server pack if the author provides one separately.
- Follow the pack's mod loader and Java requirements and its documented installation steps.
- Players use the correct Minecraft version and required client-side mods.
- Run the first test on a separate world. Check connections, important recipes and dimensions.
- Add a new mod to a working modpack only after a backup and compatibility test.

- Find the first meaningful error in the startup log, not just the final shutdown line.
- Check the version, mod loader, missing dependencies and duplicate JAR files.
- If the issue began after a recent change, return to the previous setup on a separate copy.
- When requesting help, include software and modpack versions, the error time and relevant log excerpts. Do not include login credentials.
