Choose the server type to suit the experience you want. Traditional survival, a community server with plugins and a large modpack require different software and preparation.
Agree on the game edition and version first, then the required add-ons. Move a working world to another server type only after creating a verified backup.
1. Agree on the edition and version
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition use different server environments. By default, a Java server accepts Java clients; cross-edition play requires a separate solution and compatibility checks. Paper, Fabric and Forge here refer to Java Edition.
- List the game edition in use and the required Minecraft version.
- Choose the essential plugins or modpack and check their supported versions.
- Check the Java requirement for your chosen server release. It is version-dependent, so a number from an old guide may no longer be appropriate.
2. Choose software for your gameplay
| Type | What is it for? | What should you check? |
|---|---|---|
| Vanilla | The original Minecraft experience, without standard Bukkit/Paper plugins. | The game version and required basic settings. |
| Paper / Spigot | A Java server extendable with plugins, such as teleportation or economy features. | The plugin's supported server types and versions. |
| Fabric / Forge | Mods and modpacks designed for the selected mod loader. | Mod loader, Minecraft version, dependencies and client-side requirements. |
3. Test migration with a copy of the existing world
Changing server type can alter the world's directory structure and how game rules behave. A Paper server cannot automatically replace blocks and items added by mods.
- Create a complete backup of the current working state.
- Check the world, dimensions and important builds on a separate copy.
- Test farms, permissions and add-on data.
- Replace production only after a successful test and an agreed migration window.
4. Include these details when choosing a server
- Edition, Minecraft version and required server type.
- The exact modpack name and release, or a list of important plugins.
- Whether you are starting a new world or bringing an existing one.
- Planned farms, automation, dimensions and custom settings.
