SSH provides encrypted remote access to a server's command line. Connecting requires the server address, username, port and authentication method.
Check your connection details against the handover information. On the first connection, verify the server host key fingerprint before accepting it.
1. Prepare your login details
- Server IP address or hostname, username and SSH port.
- The password or private key for this access.
- The server key fingerprint obtained from a trusted source.
2. Connect
Open Terminal or PowerShell on a machine with OpenSSH Client. Put the supplied port after -p.
- Compare the key fingerprint shown on first connection with the supplied value.
- If the key matches, accept it and enter the password. No characters appear while typing; this is normal.
- For key-based login, specify your own private key file with -i.
ssh -p 22 [email protected]3. Check where you are
The first command shows the user, the second the machine's hostname. exit closes the connection. For Permission denied, check the username and authentication; for a timeout, check the address, port and network access.
