IMAP accesses and synchronises mailbox messages. SMTP is used for sending email.
Enter the server addresses, ports, encryption and username supplied by your provider in your email client. If you do not know the settings, ask for help rather than guessing.
1. Gather the mailbox settings
| Adat | What you will need |
|---|---|
| Mailbox | The full email address and its password or app password. |
| Incoming mail | IMAP server, port and encryption. |
| Outgoing mail | SMTP server, port and authentication method. |
| Username | The format required by the provider, often the full email address. |
2. Configure incoming and outgoing connections separately
IMAP provides access to messages and folders stored on the server; SMTP handles sending. Both servers may have the same hostname, but their ports and authentication can differ. Receiving email successfully does not prove you can send it.
| Setting | Mit jelent? |
|---|---|
| IMAP | Synchronising messages and folders with the mailbox. |
| SMTP | Handing the outgoing message to the sending server. |
| SSL/TLS | Encryption from the start of the connection, on the supplied port. |
| STARTTLS | Encryption negotiated within the protocol; use only the supplied setting. |
| Authentication | Mailbox password, app password or another supported method. |
3. Test both directions
- Send a test email to another mailbox.
- Reply from that mailbox and verify receipt.
- If only sending fails, check SMTP. If only receiving fails, check IMAP and webmail.
